The Three Amigos

If you were a harpooner, would you rather be in the boat with Starbuck, Flask, or Stubb in command?

I would rather work under Starbuck. Although he has been described in class as a "buzz-kill," I find it refreshing that he just wants to do his job. He's not destracted by thoughts of vengence or doing what everyone else wants. He boarded the ship to go whaling, and that's all he wants to do. If he was in charge, as opposed to Ahab, that voyage would be much less dangerous. This trip would then revolve around whaling in general (aka the job they're supposed to be doing), instead of a quest to find Moby Dick.

I would prefer to work with Flask because he is "very pugnacious cencerning whales... and it was a sort of point of honor with him, to destroy them whenever encountered" (129). He doesn't just do his job, he has a passion for it. Plus, he seems like more fun. When heading to dinner he, of all the officers, acts playful before enduring another silent meal. I would rather be with someone who is an "aficionado" and fun to be around than the buzz kill Starbuck.

If I had to choose, I would rather work under Stubb. I think Stubb is funny and I would enjoy his "easy-going" attitude. I like that Stubb seems to do his work, but doesn't tke it to extreme seriousness. He likes to be laid-back and he realizes that "a laugh's the wisest, easiest anwser to all that's queer..." I also thought it was very funny that "when he dressed, instead of first putting his legs into his trousers, he put his pipe into his mouth." Stubb had a very optimistic attitude, and I think that he would be the best person to work under.

I agree with Queen of Babble, I'd much rather work under Starbuck. Considering he's the only one who didn't get caught up in Ahab's "pep rally," it's clear that he has the most realistic, if not the most pleasant, view of what whaling is. And who can blame him for being so cautious, since two of his family members died pursuing the same profession? Stubb would be my next choice because, even though he doesn't have that healthy dose of fear, his laid-back attitude would keep everyone calm. Flask, who has no respect for whales...is an epic fail. Nuff said.

I completely disagree with Queen of Babble, Starbuck would make a horrible captain. By just doing his job of catching whales day after day the 3 years that the crew is on board would drag by extremely slow. Ahab may not be totally sane, but is anyone that is on a boat for 3 years? He keeps the voyage interesting for the crew, giving them a goal to work toward, almost like a game. With each new day the crew is excited for another chance to catch the ellusive Moby Dick. Also Ahab has the intense leadership skills needed for a good captain while Starbuck does not stand up for what he beleives in, and backs down from Ahab. A buzz-kill and a coward... -The Clique

I would much rather have Starbuck than anyone else, he has this sence of right and wrong and he knew to back off when it wasnt his place. One thing that makes a leader a good leader is that they know when they need to lead and when they need to follow. He may be the first mate but he knew that Ahab was above him even when he dissagreed wiht him. Ahab even adresses that when he talks about him either being with the crew or a gainst it and he knows his place. I think he would be a good leader and I would feel safer on a ship wiht him than the others!

I would rather be with Starbuck, he's reasonable and more cautious. Safety should always be first and I would hope to come out of the voyage alive. With starbuck I think that I would feel more at ease than with Starbuck in charge than the other too. Plus, I feel like my personality is more like Starbuck and there would be more tension with Flask or Stubb. And it is no coincidence that my pseudonym is Starbuckaholic.

Ok, after reading chapter 48 and seeing how the mates interact with their crews, I changed my mind. I'd rather be in Stubb's boat. No matter how sensible Starbuck is, the way he only briefly whispers to his crew would keep me nervous the whole time. Stubb wouldn't be so awkward, and he seems the next most reasonable. Flask still fails.

I would most definitely want to be in Starbuck's boat. He seems to be the most intelligent, level-headed, and sensible man out of the three. I do enjoy Stubb's happy-go-lucky spirit and humorous personality, but when it comes down to life and death in a boat pursuing a whale, I would want Starbuck issuing commands. Stubb can be counted on for a laugh, but I would want someone more reliable with me while whaling. Stubb appears pretty nonchalant about the whole ordeal, whereas Starbuck seems to care about his safety, as well as the safety of the other sailors, and not to mention he is a man of faith.
